Garden Plan Design

This garden plan is designed for full sun or partial sun in warmer zones. Use the information below to replicate this beautiful layer bed with welcoming year-round color.

Key

1

A taller shrub like Spring Bouquet Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus 'Compactum') works well in the back. This shrub is compact and blooms fragrant, pinkish white flowers in the Spring.

2

Insert a row of Purple Pixie® Fringe Flower (Loropetalum chinense 'Peack'), a beautiful purple foliage that grows wide adding depth.

3

Use a Kagiri Nishiki Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Kagiri Nishiki) to anchor your bed with height. The dramatic pink tones in the leaves become more defined in the Fall.

4

Form a frame using groups of Mini Penny Royal Majestics® Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Mini Penny') at the edges. The showy flowers bloom throughout the Summer.

5

Bountiful Blue® Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'FLX-2') on the outer edge adds blue-green foliage with pink-blushed flowers in early Spring, followed by juicy blueberries that can be enjoyed all Summer.

6

Add an Emerald Colonnade® Holly (Ilex x 'RutHol1') beside the Viburnum in the back to add some shape. This versatile evergreen naturally grows in a pyramidal form and blooms in the Spring.

7

The silver-gray foliage of Grey Owl Juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Grey Owl') is used to break up the flowers in the center with texture.

8

Blue Marvel Salvia (Salvia nemorosa 'Blue Marvel') blooms bright violet flowers in early Spring to Fall. This showy perennial is also deer resistant.

9

Add several flats of Dahlinova Hypnotica® Dahlia (Dahlia Dahlinova Hypnotica® Series) to attract butterflies and anyone passing by.

10

Complete your layer bed with a front row of SunSparkler® Firecracker Sedum (Sedum hybrida 'Firecracker') and enjoy the burgundy clusters from late Summer to early Fall.
